in order to have complete concentration, i’ve already logged out of all sites! must resist! nothing else matters right now. must focus.

Today in class, I learned the funniest analogy regarding SN1 and SN2 reactions. Too bad I did not hear of this prior to strict memorizing it. 

SN1 aka “Husband leaves Wife” reaction

C= wife; L=husband; X,Y,Z = wife’s friends; Nu-=rebound

So the story goes like this: The husband L wants to leave his wife C, and he is slowly packing up his things. The only reason he feels better is because he knows her friends X,Y and Z will be there to support her by donating their electrons to help stabilize her. He knows he will not be able to leave her if she did not have a support group of at least 2 or 3. And he will leave faster if there was more alcohol involved, that is, if there were more single women H+’s in this protic environment, he would leave as soon as he can! Being on the rebound, the wife C picks up anybody Nu- to fill her void. And depending on the type of guy she meets, their relationship can take on different paths, or racemic.

SN2 aka “Two Timer” reaction

C= wife; L=husband; X,Y,Z = wife’s friends; Nu-=rebound

The wife C is not too happy with her husband L, but she doesn’t want to give him up until she finds someone better. Finally a prospective Nu- comes into her life, she makes sure her relationship with Nu- is stablized first before kicking our her husband L. So at one short point, she is two timing both men. Concertedly, once she sealed the deal with Nu-, she gets rid of her husband L. Since this is not something to be proud of, the wife C does not want to tell her friends X,Y,Z of the situation. Therefore this reaction goes as fast as possible. And since she does not want a lot of people to know, her new boy Nu- would have to come through the backdoor, ie. the backside attack, which results in an inverted product. She does not want this to be in a protic environment, as there would be a lot of single ladies H+ would can lure off her new man Nu-. So she favors a polar aprotic environment to ensure this does not happen, and being polar, it’ll stablize the Nu- in this relationship with her.
